Why Vegan?

As a vegetarian and *almost* and wanna-be vegan, this article is giving me a lot to think about.

I was raised vegetarian for health reasons. When I was in college the first time, I went through an agriculture class and was exposed to the way that animals are raised for food. Honestly, it give me nightmares and CEMENTS my decision for vegetarianism. Good article

I make a small donation to Compassion Over Killing every month. It helps me feel like I am doing something in addition to being vegan. If you ever want to trade recipes or ideas, let me know! The other day my car (complete with vegan bumper sticker)broke down while I was at the library. When I came back to get it towed, someone had left a notecard on the windshield that said: "Yay vegan! Thanks for doing your part!" It's a lifestyle with positive impact! :)

we are not vegetarians over here, but we are commited to only eating locally raised meat. when we eat out we are vegetarians, but at home we have local chicken, wild fish, our own eggs, raw milk and butter from a nearby dairy. i cannot emphasize enough how important it is to avoid eating factory raised meat. these articles really nailed that down!

We are trying to go the way Mandi mentioned. I've been reading the book Real Food by Nina Plank and it really has been eye opening. :)

I am a cattle rancher, and I agree with MOST of the article. I think that the article refers to "commercially produced meat". Meaning meat that is found in "average resturants and grocery stores". If you go beyond average in your life to be green in many ways; I would assume that this would also pertain to the meat and ALL animal products you choose to consume. I agree with Mandi, you should choose your animal products wisely. We strive to have all of our beef animals harvested locally, and not sell them at a conventional market. So far, we can only sell about 50% locally. If anyone out there is not yet a total Vegetarian, I would REALLY recommend LOCAL beef. You will learn your producer's habits, and know that they strive to treat their animals with the utmost respect the ENTIRE time they are on earth.

btw, thank you for being respectful to those of us who are not vegetarians or vegans, while still expressing your views.
